A Collection of Short Stories
From hardscrabble schoolgirls to apocalyptic arks, from dark fairy tales to sweet serendipity — twenty-five stories that prove the best tales are the ones you never see coming.
In Depression-era Louisiana, a cook's daughter arrives at an elite academy in hand-me-down shoes, armed only with her mother's advice: Put your best foot forward. These opening stories set the tone for a collection that celebrates underdogs, second chances, and the small moments that change everything.
A.L. Fredine's debut collection spans genres with the confidence of a master storyteller — from reimagined fairy tales where the monsters aren't who you think, to love stories that arrive on the most unexpected wings.
Comfort food for the soul. Best savored slowly, one story at a time.

The Author
Daughter of a career Navy man and a classically-trained pianist, West-Coaster by birth, Northerner by inclination, Elle grew up on a series of Armed Forces bases from Esquimalt to the Maritimes and the High Arctic. The adventures she's shared with her family include a wild ride down a frozen river behind a runaway dog-team, watching a tank roll past their front window through a raging white-out, and surviving a Force Eight storm at sea.
While studying to become a teacher, Elle wandered into a Theatre Design Exhibit and never quite wandered back out. She earned an M.F.A. in Directing and spent the next few decades working as a stage manager, designer, and director for professional and community groups across the country.
An accomplished artist, poet, and educator, Elle has been writing online since 2008. Her work has been included in several print anthologies and featured in online publications, and she serves as editor for five online publications. Her short story anthology The Lunchbox features work nominated for the prestigious Pushcart Prize.
She is currently at work on two romance-mystery novels — one contemporary, one Edwardian — as well as the third book in her North Haven Mysteries series.
